The Lainim Set

This was a uni project in which we used scrap wood from wood processer, Rimbunan Hijau (RH) to produce desks for schools in rural Papua New Guinea (PNG). We won an award for a desk with space for books, belongings and equipment that could be built only using simple tools such as hammers and nails to support the weight of 4 adults.

Model Making

A huge part of this project was building and prototyping, we went above and beyond, producing three full size models and many other miniature models in the space of the project.

Building and Prototyping

1:10 Models

The first designs and concepts, produced after some sketching and ideating from balsa wood and super glue. produced about 2-3 each and below are the best of the bunch.

Full Scales

We produced two 1:1 scale prototypes using pine wood to test out two of our competing ideas and iron out any big issues with joinery and assembly.

Final Concept

We then produced the final concept with a revised design that merged the back storage with leg joinery and added a pencil holding feature, merging the best part of the two concepts.
